At Ravenscroft Construction, we’re proud to support the development of future professionals. Over the past few months, Craig Cole, a third-year Quantity Surveying student from Glasgow Caledonian University, has been completing his six-month placement with us. We spoke to Craig about his experience so far.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to choose Ravenscroft
I’m 21 and currently studying Quantity Surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University, heading into my third year. I first noticed Ravenscroft’s signboards on various projects around the island, so when it came time to choose a placement, I researched the company and reached out. It felt like the perfect fit, and I joined in June 2024.
What skills have you developed during your placement?
One of the main skills I’ve gained is attention to detail. Getting measurements and calculations right is crucial in Quantity Surveying. I’ve learned how even small errors can have a big impact. The team has been patient in helping me understand the importance of doing things the right way, without shortcuts.
How does working at Ravenscroft compare to studying at university?
It’s been a big difference. At university, you learn the theory, but here, I’m seeing it in action. Practical experience at Ravenscroft has completely widened my perspective on construction. There are things I didn’t fully understand in my studies that now make sense because I can see how they work on-site. The team has been really helpful, always willing to explain things when I don’t get them right away.
What does a typical day look like for you?
There’s no real “typical” day, which I enjoy. One day I’ll be on-site gathering information for a valuation, and the next I’ll be helping order materials or working on measurements for a project package. There’s always something to learn, which keeps it interesting.
What projects have you been involved in?
I’ve mainly been working on the new Queens Road Medical Practice site, assisting James, one of the Quantity Surveyors here. But I’ve had the opportunity to visit and learn about multiple projects. It’s been a great opportunity to get hands-on experience and learn more about how a project is put together.
How has this placement prepared you for the future?
This experience has definitely set me up for a career in construction. I’m always asking questions and I’m very lucky to have colleagues who are happy to teach me while making me feel part of the team. I feel much more confident now, and I’m getting a solid understanding of what’s involved in this field.
What are your future career goals?
I want to graduate, become chartered, and keep progressing in the industry. I’m keen to learn from those around me and grow as much as I can in my career.
It’s been great having Craig with us, and we’re excited to see where his career takes him. We wish him all the best for the future!
